Fantasy in contemporary literary theory provides a framework for rethinking reality and critically engaging with social issues. Tzvetan Todorov defines fantasy through the experience of “hesitation” between natural and supernatural explanations, distinguishing it from the marvelous and the uncanny. Despite its extensive application in narrative studies, the potential of this theory for the analysis of contemporary Iranian drama has received limited attention. This study examines the realization of fantasy elements in Naghmeh Samini’s two plays, Sleep in an Empty Cup (2006) and The Language of Wild Raspberries (2017). Using a descriptive-analytical approach and library research, it investigates the components of Todorov’s theory, including hesitation, the distinction between fantasy and adjacent genres, its verbal, semantic, and syntactic dimensions, the relationship between fantasy and allegory, and its critical function. The findings show that both plays, by maintaining hesitation between the natural and the supernatural, belong to the realm of the fantastic. In Sleep in an Empty Cup, resurrection after death, rejuvenation, and metamorphosis, and in The Language of Wild Raspberries, the presence of an unborn human being and trans-spatial displacements constitute the principal mechanisms generating the fantastic experience. In these works, fantasy serves as a means of critically addressing contemporary sociopolitical issues.
