Silence is an element that, like other meaning-making concepts and elements, is perceived and understood with its opposite, i.e., sound. Silence in cinema is one of the essential issues. Because it can create meaning in sound and other formal and narrative elements, this research examines the meaning of silence in Ingmar Bergman's selected works. Bergman is a contemporary Swedish director and writer who left outstanding works in cinema, theater, and television and is considered one of the most influential contemporary filmmakers. By using cinema's ability to represent realities, he has represented religious, social, philosophical, and psychological categories. He builds direct and indirect themes of silence in the world of his films. The main goal is to recognize the meaning of silence in Bergman's cinema. The main question is, what does silence mean in Bergman's cinema? After explaining the meaning of silence in cinema and its types, this research analyzes the meaning of silence in Bergman's selected films, including The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona, Winter Light, and The Silence. This research is applied and descriptive-analytical. The method of analysis is qualitative. This research shows that silence is one of the aesthetic topics in the meaningful analysis of films, and it has a powerful function as an absent element. In the experience of the film, silence is an absence of sound in terms of the presence of sound and auditory elements, but this absence has left signs not only in the sound but also in other elements. In Bergman's cinema, the components of silence have all played a role in some way, but silence has had a more effective function in the visual, auditory, and semantic elements. In the silence of the narrative, Bergman's films are classic, and the narration of the story is expected to be clear and complete. Still, we are faced with empty parts in the script, and in all the films, verbal elements and textual patterns are somehow removed in favor of visual representation. The silence in the plot of this issue is not fully expressed in the two films, The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, but in Winter Light, The Silence, especially in Persona, happens boldly. The absence of visual elements in the films Wild Strawberries, The Silence, and Persona have been used creatively and have effectively highlighted the film's psychological themes. Auditory silence, like a visual, is peculiar and influential in the film The Silence and Persona, and the absence of sound helps make the film's implied meanings. Bergman has used semantic silence dramatically, and therefore, in raising philosophical and deep issues with stories of death, existence, nothingness, loneliness, love, betrayal, and all the realities that happen in the world, he goes to the meanings. In Bergman's films, the meaning of silence is associated with questions about God and existential and existentialist philosophy. Hence, the world of movies is similar and accurate in matching the real world. The audience can see what they experience in The Seventh Seal and Winter Light with different make-up and form in Wild Strawberries.
