In recent years, video games have emerged as a prominent and influential medium in the realm of art and entertainment, revolutionizing storytelling methods. One significant aspect of this transformation is the innovative narrative techniques employed in games, offering players immersive and impactful experiences. Among these, non-verbal storytelling elements have gained prominence, particularly in games lacking dialogue. This study delves into the utilization of these elements in the Little Nightmares, a notable example of a non-verbal game with intricate and evocative environmental design. The primary objective of this research is to examine and analyze the various functions of non-verbal storytelling elements, such as environmental design, music, character movement, and object interactions. The study seeks to understand how these elements can effectively convey a complex and emotional narrative without the need for dialogue, while simultaneously enriching the player's experience. In other words, this research explores how the use of colors, lighting, sound, music, character movements, and environmental changes can evoke specific emotions and concepts like fear, anxiety, and loneliness, transforming the game into a profound, wordless experience.
The research methodology focuses on a qualitative approach, utilizing an inductive process to gather and analyze data from various video games across different genres. It begins with the collection of data through a documentary review of works that incorporate non-verbal storytelling elements. The Little Nightmares is specifically chosen due to its distinctive ability to convey intricate, emotional narratives without relying on spoken dialogue. Instead, the game uses elements like environmental design, music, and sound to create an immersive and emotionally charged experience for the player. To analyze these elements, the research employs open coding to categorize the data and uncover patterns and relationships. The constant comparative method is then used to compare and refine these categories, allowing for the identification of key themes and trends. In the conceptual narrative model phase, these identified categories are examined in terms of their functional roles in storytelling. The study further explores how these non-verbal elements align with and complement other aspects of the game, such as visual design, music, and sound, to evaluate how effectively they contribute to advancing the overall narrative of the game.
The research findings indicate that the use of non-verbal elements in Little Nightmares has fostered empathy with the characters and the game world. The game creates an atmosphere where players, without dialogue, connect with the game's concepts and emotions, engaging in a deep psychological experience. This research highlights the importance of non-verbal storytelling in creating engaging, impactful, and artistic games. With the rise of technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), this narrative style can play a key role in designing future interactive games. These findings can serve as a model for video game production, especially in artistic, philosophical, and psychological areas, contributing to high-quality interactive works. Future research could explore comparative studies of non-verbal elements in various games and their cultural and genre-specific impacts, as well as the effects of these elements in newer games with VR and AR technologies.
