[English]

The purpose of this study is to examine the process of conveying cosmological and anthropological concepts in Pixar's animation Soul (2020). It, directed by Pete Docter and co-written with Kemp Powers and Mike Jones, is notable for its exploration of philosophical themes, including the meaning of life, the nature of the soul, and the relationship between this and the other worlds. To achieve this, a qualitative content analysis approach was employed, which involved an in-depth examination of the animation’s production process, from its initial ideation and conceptualization phases to pre-production and final production stages. Particular attention was given to the creative decisions regarding visual metaphors, narrative structures, and innovative animation techniques. These elements were scrutinized to understand how Soul effectively represents philosophical cosmological and anthropological ideas in a manner accessible to a diverse audience.

The study highlights the interdisciplinary collaboration of the production team as a key factor in the film's success. The lived experiences and personal insights of the creative leads played a significant role in shaping the film's narrative and thematic depth. Docter, known for his previous works such as Inside Out (2015), brought a nuanced understanding of emotional and psychological storytelling, while Powers contributed cultural authenticity and depth to the story. Together, they crafted a narrative that resonates across cultural and intellectual boundaries.

One of the standout aspects of Soul is its use of visual and auditory design to create a world that is both relatable and metaphysical. The animation employs innovative visual techniques, including the use of abstract forms, surreal spaces, and symbolic representations, to depict realms such as the "Great Before" and the "Great Beyond." Colors and lighting are used strategically to evoke emotions and spiritual reflections. For example, soft pastel shades and glowing lights are prevalent in the Great Before, creating a sense of serenity and otherworldliness, while the urban setting of New York City is depicted with a contrasting vibrancy and chaos, symbolizing the dynamism of earthly life.

Moreover, the film uses music, particularly jazz, as a narrative device that ties together the film's themes of passion, purpose, and the beauty of life's fleeting moments. The protagonist, Joe Gardner, a jazz musician, represents the quest for purpose and the interplay between personal ambition and the appreciation of everyday experiences. The soundtrack, composed by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste, seamlessly integrates these themes into the film’s fabric, enriching its philosophical underpinnings.

The findings of this study suggest that Soul succeeds in representing complex philosophical ideas through its innovative approach to storytelling and design. By simplifying abstract concepts without compromising their depth, the animation demonstrates the power of the medium as a tool for philosophical inquiry. It shows that animation, as both an artistic and cultural form, has immense potential to engage audiences with intricate cosmological and anthropological themes, making them accessible and emotionally resonant. Ultimately, Soul stands as a testament to the ability of animation to explore profound questions about existence and meaning, all while captivating viewers through its artistry and creativity.
